Linguistic Mediation is highlighted in both the CEFR and the LOMLOE. In this 15-hour course, we address the principal characteristics of Mediation for English Secondary teachers.

Description: Online course focusing on mediation in the Secondary language classroom with access lasting ten weeks.

Since the Council of Europe published the CEFR Companion Volume in 2018, Mediation has been one of the hottest topics in language teaching. Now with its incorporation into the LOMLOE educational reform as one of the specific competences for foreign languages, it is something all language teachers need to be familiar with.

In this course, we’ll explore the three mediation activities set out by the CEFR: texts, concepts, and communication across written and spoken production. We’ll see the fundamental role that sociocultural awareness plays in mediation as well as tackling the questions of what we are assessing and how to assess mediation.

Objectives:

  • Raise your awareness of the key elements of mediation as a language skill
  • Explore the three mediation activity types: mediating a text, mediating concepts, and mediating communication.
  • Reflect on what mediation means in practice in the language classroom.
  • Analyse both written and spoken mediation tasks.
  • Discover the importance of sociocultural awareness to mediation and reflect on the role of English as a Lingua Franca.
  • Increase your knowledge of good practice when it comes to evaluating mediation activities.

Contents:

  • Mediation: what is it and why is everyone talking about it?
  • What are the three mediation activities set out by the CEFR and what do they look like in the classroom.
  • Understanding spoken and written mediation activities and best classroom practice.
  • Communication in context: the key role sociocultural awareness plays in mediation activities.
  • How do we assess our students mediation skills and what should we be assessing?

Methodology: A modular online course containing a wide variety of multimedia resources and activities.
